Core beliefs are our deeply held assumptions about ourselves, others, and the world around us. They shape how we think, feel, and act. These beliefs are like lenses that color every experience. We all wear different lenses, which is why two people can have the same experience yet respond to it in very different ways.
Our Core Beliefs worksheet illustrates how core beliefs function, provides examples of common negative core beliefs, and helps clients identify their own negative core beliefs. Use this worksheet with clients who have mood or anxiety disorders or patterns of relationship issues. Core beliefs are emotionally charged, so work on this tool in session rather than assigning it as homework.
To further uncover core beliefs, try the CBT downward arrow technique. Once clients understand their negative core beliefs, they can begin to challenge and revise them.
