Toward & Away Moves ACT values exercise

Living by your values isn’t always easy. It often requires facing discomfort or uncertainty. When this is the case, it’s tempting to fall back on whatever is convenient or comfortable.

Our Toward & Away Moves worksheet invites you to identify a personal value and then list four behaviors that move you toward or away from that value. Once completed, the worksheet offers support for making more intentional choices in difficult moments.

Grounded in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), this resource works especially well for those who feel stuck in unhelpful patterns, struggle with avoidance, or find it hard to follow their values. It is well suited for addiction, relationship reactivity, procrastination, or emotional withdrawal.

To get the most out of the exercise, consider these follow-up questions:

  • Which toward move feels hardest right now, and why?
  • What situations tend to trigger your away moves?
  • Which toward step could you practice this week?
