Anger Iceberg

When anger is present, other emotions—such as hurt, fear, or shame—can be hidden beneath the surface. Addressing these underlying feelings can often be more helpful than keeping the focus on anger alone.

Our Anger Iceberg PDF brings this truth to life through the metaphor of an iceberg. Anger appears above the surface, since it’s often the feeling people notice first. The less obvious emotions that can contribute to anger appear under water.

Ideal for group or individual therapy, use this resource to help clients explore what’s beneath their anger. Encourage them to reflect on where these other emotions come from and why it’s hard to allow them to surface. Consider the following discussion questions:

  • Imagine a friend were in the situation that’s making you angry. What emotions do you think they might feel other than anger?
  • Which emotions does your family freely express, and which do they keep to themselves?
  • Imagine a person who handles difficult emotions effectively. How do they show these emotions? How do they cope with them?
