Reflecting on Boundaries discussion questions

Boundaries are the limits and rules we set for ourselves in relationships. To have healthy boundaries, we find a balance between the things we allow and disallow. If we say “yes” to everything, we’ll quickly be overwhelmed by others’ wants and needs. But if we say “no” all the time, we won’t be able to learn, grow, or have enriching experiences.

Our Boundaries Discussion Questions worksheet presents thought-provoking questions on personal boundaries. These encourage clients to reflect on their boundaries and the role they play in their mental health and well-being. Some of the topics explored include:

tailoring boundaries to specific relationships using boundaries to honor values
cultural differences in boundaries setting work-life boundaries
rigid vs. porous boundaries common boundary challenges

Use this resource with clients who want to develop healthier boundaries and relationships. This includes clients who have trouble saying “no” to others, prioritizing their needs or values, or relaxing their boundaries when it would benefit them to do so. The questions are also appropriate for discussing individual and relationship needs in couples therapy as well as life or relationship skills in group therapy.
