Cognitive Triangle

Thoughts, emotions, and behaviors all affect one another. When we have self-critical thoughts, we tend to have difficult emotions and unhelpful behaviors. Targeting these thoughts can improve our emotions and behaviors.

The CBT Triangle worksheet provides a diagram of the model, along with an example and brief descriptions of each element of the model:

  • Thoughts are how you interpret a situation. They may or may not be accurate.
  • Emotions are feelings like happy, sad, or angry. They are shaped by your thoughts and actions.
  • Behaviors are the things you say or do. They are a response to your thoughts and emotions.

This worksheet can serve as an introduction to CBT and kick off the process of modifying thoughts.
